Looking at booking a holiday in China, anyone been?

Been a couple of time, although 67 is your man for the low down on all things Chinese, he’s done it all in between building high speed rail, from adopting stray dogs to “Fraternising “ with the locals……………
I have quiet enjoyed my visits, Beijing was much greener than I realised, tree lined streets, seeing the sights is ok although be prepared for a bit of a scrum down at most of the famous sites, when the locals are visiting its jam packed, the traffic as well is horrendous at times and the smog that hangs over most Chinese city’s can be intense.
Particularly liked Yunnan province, the locals there are a bit different and actually don’t particularly like those from the north, spent century’s being oppressed by them I think, but Lijiang and surrounding area was lovely.
Be prepared for gobbing on the streets, it’s a national pastime, as is smoking just about everywhere, although the big city’s less so particularly the main areas and smoking bans are enforced, but elsewhere its all ignored.

I've not been to Beijing or Shanghai but apparently they both decent place.The rest of China I saw was at early 20th century levels
Taiwan I have worked and lived for 2 years and recommend that if you are interested in true Chinese culture

Done Shanghai, Hong Kong and Beijing on business. Loved all three. No recomendations for holidays.

I worked in China for 3 years. Mao obliterated any Chinese history that occurred before the revolution, He is still in Icon in China. So the modern Chinese will know nothing about the opium wars etc .
The revolution stopped to fight the Japanese, Mao and Shan Kai Shek together so that is the history that is existing
We had a Chinese student working as a translator for us, When The 20th anniversary of Tiananmen Square Massacre was due, we asked the student vaguely what happened there. He replied "If was foreigners causing trouble" So they know fuck all about their history going back 20 years
